Assignments for 10/21

Period 1:

I understand that you had some trouble with the problems I assigned.  Sorry about that.  Today you have a lab about the main idea from yesterday’s reading:

  1. Energy conservation means that you can trade one form of energy for another.  Kinetic (moving) energy can be traded for Potential (position) energy and vice versa.
  2. Work is how much energy your giving to an object.  Maybe you’ve lifted it and given it Potential Energy.  Maybe you pushed on it to make it move faster and gave it Kinetic Energy.

The lab today focuses on that relationship between the two.  Use the  Energy Skate Park simulation to complete the lab that the substitute has. (The Lab looks like this, but use the paper copies!)  This should take about 40min.  Then try the problems from yesterday again.  As always, feel free to work in groups on both.  If you have questions, email me!

Period 2:

Today you have a lab on Hooke’s Law.  You’ll be using the PhET simulation Masses & Springs to complete the worksheet that the substitute has.  (The lab looks like this, but complete it on the paper the sub gives you.)

You’re trying to find “k.”  The constant that tells you how stiff a spring is, or in terms from yesterday’s reading; how much work you’ll have to do to stretch or compress the spring.  Feel free to work in groups on this.  It should take you about an hour.  Once you’re done, work on any problems left over from yesterday.  If you’re confused, email me!

Period 5:

Read the following passage on Jupiter  then answer these questions.

  1. Describe the appearance of Jupiter’s atmosphere. Which features are long-lived and which are relatively fleeting?
  2. What causes the belts and zones in Jupiter’s atmosphere?
  3. Compare and contrast the surface features of the four Galilean satellites, discussing their geologic activity and their evolution.
  4. Why are numerous impact craters found on Ganymede and Callisto but not on Io or Europa?
  5. Discuss why astronomers believe that Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto may harbor some sort of marine life. Why do they not expect any life on the surfaces of these worlds?
